"United Against Big Tech: How Journalists and Geeks Can Fight for a Fairer Digital Future" is a presentation where journalist Natalia and technologist Babak will explore how media professionals and tech experts can join forces to challenge the power of Big Tech. Natalia will highlight how investigative journalism exposes corporate abuses, while Babak will demonstrate how hackers and developers can build privacy-focused tools, analyze data leaks, and create decentralized alternatives to monopolistic platforms. Together, they’ll discuss real-world strategies—from secure whistleblowing systems to algorithmic transparency—and show how collaboration between storytellers and coders can reclaim digital rights. This dynamic duo will argue that by combining journalism’s reach with tech’s innovation, they can push back against surveillance capitalism, misinformation, and unchecked corporate power—ultimately paving the way for a more ethical and democratic internet.

Babak was working in ICT4D before it had a name, and has, since, created solutions for NGOs and news organisations on 5 continents.

He brought photomarathons to Africa and won the Highway Africa new media award. To date, he is the only person to have won the UN World Summit Award three times; in 2012 for Uganda, in 2016 for Brazil, and in 2021 for The Netherlands.

He has a keen interest in creating mobile solutions for urban discovery that move decision making powers into the hands of the individual, along the lines of the ideas of the Situationists.
